A room of his own

A room of his own

Virginia Woolfe once wrote that “a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.” But authors are not alone in their need for dedicated spaces. Children, too, desire spaces of their own.

George Murray is one such child. The five-year-old designed his own tree house while eating with his family in a Boston Pizza restaurant. On a paper napkin, he drew a round, two-level house. And just two months later, his creative vision was expanded into the structure pictured here. George’s father and grandfather, carpenters by trade, constructed the final product that stayed true to the boy’s dream.

The tree house stands in the corner of the family’s backyard, sprouting upwards from a large yellow cedar log. George and his 18-month-old brother have to crawl up a ladder through a circular hole. The plywood and cedar walls curve around, and the boys have a balcony from which to ruminate about their world.
